The organiser of the event, the GSMA, has decided to extend the contract to stay in the city of Barcelona after reaching an agreement with the Government of Catalonia, the city councils of Barcelona and L'Hospitalet de Llobregat and the Mobile World Capital Barcelona Foundation to make up to the event that could not be held in 2020. Therefore, the contract will run until 2024, one year longer than planned.
Jordi Puigneró, Minister of Digital Policies of the Generalitat de Catalunya, has stated that this extension is a “first element for the reactivation of the Catalan economy”, and that it is a very important success at the national level, as it gives us the confidence to continue counting on the support of the most relevant technological event in the world.
The MWC welcomes more than 100,000 attendees from all over the world every year, with an economic impact of around 500 million euros. It is therefore one of the most eagerly awaited events of the year in Barcelona and throughout the country, not only because of the technological innovations it brings, but also because of the jobs it creates.
Next Mobile World Congress edition will take place, if everything continues as planned and no new setbacks arise, from March 1 to 4, 2021. A date that all event organization agencies in Barcelona such as CREA Group have highlighted in the calendar and we look forward to it more than usual.
What happens in 2024 will be another question that we will have to face later. For now, we applaud the GSMA's decision to extend the contract signed with Fira de Barcelona to organize the MWC in Barcelona for another year.
